Entry #206: What are the advantages/disadvantages of the consolidator?

Question
What are the advantages/disadvantages of the consolidator?
Answer
The consolidator was developed for ViewPoint on an OpenVMS system so that one could get data from multiple nodes into one trace file (the advantage). It is similar to the concept of doing a $MONITOR CLUSTER and getting information from cluster members all at once. The way ViewPoint has evolved does seem to render it less useful because you can plot the same variables from multiple nodes running their own individual trace files.

The disadvantages of the consolidator are that you cannot use the Event Scope on a consolidator and the consolidator cannot report applications (such as Oracle) from a node that it is not running on. Another thing to note about the consolidator is the timing of its initial startup. If a donor is brought up after the consolidator is started, then it will not report statistics on that donor.
